Celebrated according to the Julian calendar, the Russian Orthodox Christmas falls on 7 January and is a huge celebration for Orthodox Christians across Russia. Events begin on the eve of the holiday with a special televised speech by the President of Russia,Dmitry Medvedev.

Many attend Christmas religious services which are held in churches throughout Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The Midnight Mass service on Christmas Eve in the restored Christ the Saviour Cathedral near the Kremlin is one of the main services.

The Kremlin,Moscow,January 7, 2010 President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev wished Orthodox Christians and all Russians a happy Christmas. The congratulatory address reads, in part: “The celebration of Christmas is one of the sources of our spiritual traditions, linked to the Christian ideals of morality and mercy which have for centuries been major values and milestones for the people and basis for the social life in Russia. Today, they continue to strengthen the moral foundations of our society and maintain the atmosphere of mutual respect, religious tolerance and concord. Joint efforts of the government and the Russian Orthodox Church pursue common goals we all share, those of ensuring social stability and developing dialogue among faiths, as well as educating and bringing up the younger generations in the spirit of true patriotism and respect for family values. Christmas is the time for good wishes and good deeds. Let the light of this holiday always be with you, give you confidence, bring joy and hope.” The President and his spouse attended a Christmas service that was held in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.
