A " Russian Union of Friendship Societies " (RSOD) to be established
At the end of May a conference with representatives of Russian NGO's for Friendship with Peoples of Foreign Countries belonging to the Russian Association for International Cooperation (RNA) was held in Moscow.
The RNA - a public organization established in 1992 as the successor of the Union of Soviet Societies of Friendship (USSF), brings together more than 70 friendship societies and other social organizations.
The main objectives of the conference were important issues revitalization of friendship associations in the development of international cooperation, acceptance into the Association of new organizations and a decision on the establishment of the Russian Union of Friendship Societies (RSOD).
This initiative was recently launched by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and the Russian Government, who also proposed to update the activities of the House of Friendship with Peoples of Foreign Countries in Moscow.
Chairman Farid Mukhametshin RNA noted in his speech that "the main effort of friendship societies focused on supporting and promoting foreign countries in the Russian language and culture of the peoples of Russia, expanding contacts with compatriots living abroad and relations of educational institutions."
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin said that the Russian Foreign Ministry is ready to render necessary assistance in establishing the RSOD.
"The new public organization can provide significant support to Russia's efforts in the international arena and become the vanguard of the national public diplomacy" - he said.
At the conference it was decided that 16 additional Russian non-governmental organizations join the RNA.

В конце мая в Москве состоялась конференция с участием представителей российских обществ дружбы с народами зарубежных стран, входящих в Российскую ассоциацию международного сотрудничества (РАМС).
РАМС – общественная организация, учреждённая в 1992 году и ставшая правопреемницей Союза советских обществ дружбы (ССОД). Она объединяет в своем составе более 70 обществ дружбы и других общественных организаций.
Основными целями конференции стали актуальные вопросы активизации деятельности обществ дружбы в развитии международного сотрудничества, приём в Ассоциацию новых организаций и принятие решения об учреждении Российского союза обществ дружбы (РСОД). С такой инициативой недавно выступил Президент России Дмитрий Медведев и Правительство Российской Федерации, которые также предложили обновить деятельность Дома дружбы с народами зарубежных стран в Москве.
Председатель РАМС Фарит Мухаметшин в своем выступлении отметил, что «основные усилия обществ дружбы сосредоточены на поддержке и популяризации в иностранных государствах русского языка и культуры народов России, расширении контактов с соотечественниками, проживающими за рубежом и связей образовательных учреждений».
Выступивший на конференции заместитель министра иностранных дел Алексей Бородавкин заявил, что МИД России готово оказывать необходимое содействие в создании РСОД. «Новая общественная организация может оказывать весомую поддержку усилиям России на международной арене, стать авангардом отечественной народной дипломатии», - сказал он.
На конференции было принято решение о принятии в РАМС еще 16 российских неправительственных организаций.
